SDM PA 801 Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology A course for postdoctoral students in the dental specialty programs covering a spectrum of diseases involving the oral and paraoral structures. Lectures will include fibro-osseous lesions, developmental disturbances affecting the jaws and teeth, odontogenic tumors, cysts of the oral and paraoral region, bacterial, viral and mycotic infections, benign tumors and tumor-like lesions, white lesions, pigmented lesions, vesicullo-bullous diseases, hematologic, endocrine, and metabolic disorders. Dr. Kabani. 2 cr, 2nd sem.
SDM PA 803Histology Review Systematic histology review aimed at refreshing the resident’s ability to use the microscope to recognize and identify normal cells, tissues and organs, and to correlate structure with function. Dr. Gallagher. 4 cr. 1st sem.
SDM PA 805, 806, 809, 810 Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Literature Review This weekly discussion seminar will focus on the important literature underlying the practice of oral and maxillofacial pathology. Articles of present and historical interest will be reviewed and their significance discussed. Students will learn to understand how present understanding of oral diseases and conditions has developed, and become aware of current controversies and topics of ongoing research. Drs. Gallagher and Kabani. 4 cr, 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th sem.
SDM PA 811, 812, 813, 814 Microscopic Interpretation Sessions devoted to developing resident’s familiarity with Histology, General Pathology, and Oral Pathology. Drs. Gallagher, Kabani and Noonan. 8 cr. 1st, 2nd, 5th and 6th sem.
SDM PA 815,816 Clinical/Radiographic/Microscopic Sessions Sessions between individual faculty and resident that are devoted to review of interesting diagnostic problems, with a focus on integration of available information, developing and ranking the differential diagnoses and choosing a preferred diagnosis based upon all information available. Projected images and archived microscopic slides are utilized and the emphasis is on both breadth and depth of coverage. Drs.Gallagher, Kabani and Noonan. 4cr, 5th and 6thsem.
SDM PA 881, 882, 883, 884, 885, 886 Diagnostic Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Residents in oral and maxillofacial pathology will spend time each day reviewing the principles and practice of the microscopic diagnosis of diseases affecting tissues of the head and neck. The departmental biopsy service accessions more than 6,000 cases per year, and a large catalogued archive is available to provide supplemental experience with rare disorders. The students will diagnose and write up cases under the supervision of board-certified oral and maxillofacial pathologists. They will order and interpret histochemical and immunohistochemical studies when indicated. Correlation of clinical, radiographic, and histopathologic data will be central to the diagnostic process. Periodic microscopic diagnosis exercises will be used to monitor students’ progress in this area of study. Drs. Gallagher and Kabani. 18 cr, 1st-6th sem.
SDM PA 991 Research: Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Guided scientific investigation in oral pathology and related fields. Partially completes the requirements for the Master of Science in Dentistry. Selected Preceptor. 4 cr. 1st and 2nd sem.
