Oral and maxillofacial pathology is the specialty of dentistry and pathology that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial region. The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology offers an integrated curriculum of clinical and laboratory training, basic science courses, and seminars leading to a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and a Master of Science in Dentistry in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology
The curriculum for the CAGS in oral and maxillofacial pathology is structured to meet the accreditation standards for advanced specialty education programs in oral and maxillofacial pathology of the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation.
The primary goal of the CAGS in oral and maxillofacial pathology is to prepare dentists to become specialists who are proficient in providing oral pathology services to the community and profession. The program provides the formal educational requirements for the examinations of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology.
The CAGS in oral and maxillofacial pathology is a 36-month, university-based postgraduate program. In addition to coursework and clinical training at the School of Dental Medicine, the trainee will work with licensed pathologists in the School of Dental Medicine’s oral and maxillofacial pathology biopsy service. The service processes more than 6,000 biopsies each year. The student will also gain experience in general pathology, autopsy pathology, exfoliative cytology fine-needle aspiration cytology, and laboratory medicine in the Mallory Institute of Pathology at Boston Medical Center.
