HANDS-ON COURSE

The BLS for Health Care Providers Recertification Course is
designed to teach the skills of CPR for victims of all ages (including
ventilation with a barrier device, a bag-mask
device, and oxygen), use of an automated
external defibrillator (AED), and relief of a
foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO). It
is intended for participants who already hold
a BLS certification card and provide health
care to patients in a wide variety of settings,
including in-hospital and out-of-hospital
settings. These health care providers may
include (but are not limited to) physicians,
nurses, paramedics, emergency medical
technicians, physicians assistants, residents or fellows or medical
or nursing students, aides, medical or nursing assistants, dentists,
dental hygienists, and other allied health personnel. The course
is also designed for anyone who is required to take a health care
provider course for employment.
This is a 4-hour program that involves multiple learning styles:
videotape demonstration and practice; instructor led discussions
and practice scenarios; and peer practice sessions. All participants
who successfully complete the course, including the written
examination and skills demonstration, will receive a BLS for Health
Care Providers Course completion card. This is valid for 2 years.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the links in the AHA Chain of Survival - activate
EMS system
- Describe the steps of CPR for an adult, child, and infant
- Perform CPR using a barrier device and bag-mask ventilation
- Perform one and two rescuer CPR for an adult, child, and infant
- Perform rescue breathing mouth-to-barrier
- Know how and when to use an AED on victims greater than 8
years of age
- Perform skills for relief of a FBAO in the responsive and
unresponsive victim
