Counseling/Advising Programs and Services
During dental school, you may have questions about academic or other matters. The BUSDM Office of Admissions and Student Services (G-305, 617/638-4787) and the Office of Academic Affairs 100 East Newton Street (G-705, 617/638-5241) provide students with information, resource referrals, and counseling on academic and student-related issues.
There may be times when you find it difficult to cope with the different pressures you will face as a student. Sometimes juggling the responsibilities of dental school and life can affect one's health, emotional well being, or relationships. The Office of Admissions and Student Services is available to counsel and provide resource referrals to students. The Office can provide assistance in contacting private counseling services. The Office also provides information to students who have general questions or problems or who need information on services for students with disabilities and other educational and community resources. In addition, Boston University and the School of Dental Medicine have a number of counseling and advising programs and services that are available to all full-time students, of which you should not hesitate to take advantage, including:
- Student Mental Health Clinic at the B.U. Student Health Services, 881 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 617/353-3569 (Emergency: 617/353-3575) The Student Mental Health Clinic provides confidential mental health services for students. A board-certified psychiatrist directs a staff of psychiatrists and psychologists who manage the entire range of mental health problems. Emergency mental health cases are seen immediately 24 hours a day. Follow-up and routine cases are seen by appointment. The mental health clinic staff also includes a licensed clinical social worker who serves as a crisis intervention counselor and is available for emergencies 24 hours a day.
- The Danielsen Institute, 185 Bay State Road, Boston, MA 617/353-3047, daninst@bu.edu. The Danielson Institute provides confidential counseling for individuals, partners, couples, families and groups. They have a sliding scale fee structure.
- Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders, 648 Beacon St, 6th floor, Boston, MA 617/353-9610 The Center for Anxiety and Related Disorders offers assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders. Treatment can be done on a short-term individual basis or as a group treatment. Services are done by appointment and there is a sliding fee scale.
- Boston University Chaplains, 735 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, MA 617/353-3560
Boston University chaplains are available by appointment to counsel Boston University graduate and undergraduate students. Religious life on campus includes the following faiths: interfaith, Baha'i, Buddhist, Christian-Catholic, Christian-Evangelical, Christian-Orthodox, Christian-Protestant, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh.
- Speakeasy, 617/353-3528 speasy@bu.edu Hours: Monday-Thursday, 9:30 pm-1:30 am Speakeasy is a phone line that offers anonymous and confidential support for students from trained peers. The line is available during the academic year.

- Boston University Security Department. BU Security has an escort security service that will provide vehicular or pedestrian escorts to the garages, lots and surrounding medical center buildings during night and weekend hours upon request. Escorts are subject to availability by calling Security dispatch at extension 617/638-4444 or 617/414-4444 if in vicinity of the Harrison Pavilion. The Office of General Services recommends that you utilize the shuttle services available to you that transport to the garages, lots, surrounding medical center buildings and authorized MBTA stops.
- Boston University International Student Services International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO),19 Deerfield St. 2 nd floor (617/353-3565) The International Students and Scholars Office conducts special orientation programs and offers advice on regulations concerning U.S. immigration, employment, and taxes as well as housing, cultural adjustment, and financial problems.
- Boston University Health and Disability Services Office of Disability Services.19 Deerfield St., Boston, MA 617/353-3658 (voice or TAY), access@bu.edu If you have a disability and will need specific accommodations, please contact the office via the information above. Individuals with learning disabilities should direct their inquiries to the Learning Disability Support Services Program at the Office of Disability Services.
- Educational Resource Center, 1 University Road, Suite 150 617/353-7077, erc@bu.edu. The Educational Resource Center offers a number of services for both students and faculty, including a writing center and computer resources. They also offer a number of workshops on various topics such as time management and study skills.
Sports and Fitness at Boston University
- Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Dental students are presented with daily academic challenges and can face some hurdles in their sprint to the finish. Along the way, it is beneficial to take advantage of the various sports and fitness opportunities available at Boston University in general. Physical Education, Recreation and Dance offers club sports, intramural sports, family recreation, health and fitness workshops, workout facilities, and recreational classes. Family Resources
- Office of Family Resources, 985 Commonwealth Ave, Boston, MA, 617/353-5954. The following services are available to members of the Boston University Community: free referral service and resource materials for parents seeking childcare; a child-care service listing of Boston University students (with previous child-care experience) available for babysitting on a short-term basis; a resource library for families with information on child-care and elder-care issues, support groups, etc.; school vacation programs for children in Grades K through 5.
- The Boston University Children's Center, 32 Harry Agannis Way,
617/353-3413. The Children's Center provides a full-time (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) child-care program for children ages two through five. For information about this service, availability, the application process, and related charges, call the Center.
- The Early Childhood Learning Lab (ECLL), 1 Sherborn Street, 617/353-7258. The Early Childhood Learning Lab is run through the School of Education from early September to mid-June. They offer a half-day preschool program and an extended day program until 2 pm. Children may attend 3-5 days a week.
