BUMC Fire Regulations
Red fire alarm boxes, extinguishers and blankets are conspicuously located throughout the building. Learn their locations.
Drill or Actual Fire
Wherever the word "Drill" appears in this section it is intended to be used as a code word for "Fire." Do not use the word "Fire" in connection with a fire "drill" or fire alarm in the presence of patients or visitors. The signal for a fire or "drill" will be "Drill". When reporting a fire condition, use the word "Drill" and give location such as Drill, Dental School "G," room number. Upon operation of the building alarm systems, a continuous chime bell or horn will alert all units in that building.
A person discovering a fire should take the following actions:
- Remove patients from imminent or immediate danger. Do not use the elevators. Special circumstances: Patients who are wheelchair bound, on a stretcher or in surgery (sedation or general anesthesia) need not be moved. However, arrangements must be made whereby a designated person stays with the patient while another designated runner informs firefighters of the location. At that time, firefighting personnel will arrange for evacuation, as necessary.
- Operate nearest fire alarm box. Pull cover up and pull lever to operate it. Personnel should familiarize themselves with the fire alarm box nearest their work site.
- Notify Central Control, X86666 and give "drill" location.
- If fire is small, try to extinguish fire using proper extinguisher at hand, otherwise evacuate. Do not use water on an electrical fire.
Individuals should take the following action in the event a "Drill" signal is given:
- When the signal is given, personnel involved in the fire area will close all doors and windows (if this is a patient area, remove patients from immediate danger first). All personnel must evacuate the building.
- Do not run. Do not panic. Use either front or back stairways only. Do not use elevators.
- Security and Maintenance personnel will report to the scene of the drill for firefighting duty under the supervision of the Manager of Operations or his designee, until the arrival of the Boston Fire Department when the officer in charge will take over control measures.
- The front stairway must be clear to allow access to firefighters and their equipment.
Physically Impaired Patients: In case of a Fire Drill/Emergency, the treating student doctor with the help of a faculty or staff member is responsible for transporting these patients to a safe area and inform the floor's marshal or a fire department officer of the location of the patient. The responsibility of evacuating the patient is then upon the Fire Department Team.

Your Role in the Appearance of the Building
BUSDM serves not only as an educational facility but also as a patient care facility. We are always under the scrutiny of patients who come to visit us expecting high quality dental care at an affordable price. We are fortunate to have an outstanding and dedicated building, maintenance, and custodial staff. However, students, faculty, and staff all must share a responsibility in the appearance of the dental school.
We ask our students to share in the pride that we feel toward our building, our classrooms, and our clinics. Start now to become a professional and assume some ownership for your responsibility in the facility in which you will very soon practice clinical dentistry. If you notice something broken, report it. If you notice a piece of paper on the floor or ground, pick it up and dispose of it. It is especially important to keep our classrooms clean. We do not allow food or beverages into our classrooms. You will find that by taking seriously your responsibility for the way we look, you will start feeling good about yourself--as a professional! Start early in your career thinking about how your patients will perceive the environment into which you bring them. This will reflect itself in how you act and how you dress.
Under no circumstances should any announcements be placed on doors, walls, or elevators. Your cooperation is expected to upgrade and maintain the professional image of the school.
