Objectives and general overview of proposed activities:

  • To provide a series of lectures with presentations by BU faculty, residents, private oral surgeons, industry representatives, and senior dental students. The aim of this lecture series is to encourage predoctoral students interested in the specialty and raise the interest of the profession among all students. Graduating seniors will give presentations dealing with the application process, interviews, externships, and the various OMFS programs.
  • To explain the application process for postdoctoral programs in general to the third-year students; to explain everything about the PASS, MATCH, interviews, etc.
  • To provide services to students interested in pursuing a residency program in oral & maxillofacial surgery. These services include:
    • Promote and encourage participation of dental students in research projects with oral & maxillofacial surgery faculty and to make such research opportunities available to interested students
    • Allow interested students to attend the resident lectures and seminars and to post the schedule of these lectures on the PAOMS website.
    • Allow interested students to sign up for and observe major surgeries in the operating room
    • Allow interested students to take call with residents.
    • Have an optional anesthesia rotation for students interested in the specialty
    • Provide interested students with the opportunity to go on mission trips to developing countries with, e.g., Heal the Children.
  • To volunteer in and organize community service projects.
  • To develop a website to educate and inform the dental students about the goals of the organization, and the benefits and services provided. The website will also keep students aware of any upcoming events.
  • To develop a quarterly newsletter that covers a variety of topics pertaining to the specialty of oral & maxillofacial surgery
  • To enhance relationships with other student organizations at Boston University and support them in their endeavors in reaching out to the predental community.
