Welcome
The Student Dental Plan offers low-cost, high-quality care for students' basic dental needs such as cleanings and fillings. The service is brought to you by the fine professionals at Boston University School of Dental Medicine.
Who can sign up for the plan?
The plan is available to all undergraduate and graduate, full- and part-time students. Spouses and dependent children are also invited to become members when the student enrolls. So whether you are an undergraduate day student whose home is in California or a graduate student who works by day and takes classes at night, you are eligible to become a member.
How does the plan work?
This is an optional, prepaid plan -- you register for the year (or for the second semester only) and a number of services are covered. There are no co-payments, deductibles, yearly maximums, or claim forms.
Where will I receive care?
The Boston University School of Dental Medicine is an international leader in dental education and patient care. Our facility is located in Boston's South End and is easily reached by mass transit. Call us to arrange a tour, 617/638-4698.
Who provides my care?
When you subscribe to The Student Dental Plan you will be treated at Boston University School of Dental Medicine by highly trained dental students under the supervision of licensed dentists. The plan has the benefit of offering dental care at a lower cost than in most private offices but will require a greater time commitment on the part of the patient.

What services does the plan cover?
The plan emphasizes preventive care -- that means we want to keep your teeth healthy. We also believe that the decision to have a cavity filled or to seek emergency treatment should not be driven by the cost. That's why we also include basic restorative and emergency services under the plan.
These services are covered:
- cleanings and regular oral examinations
- twice-a-year fluoride treatment (as needed)
- oral hygiene instruction and follow-up
- radiographs (X-rays) as needed for services provided by the plan
- routine silver fillings (amalgams) and tooth-colored fillings (composites)
- emergency treatment for relief of pain
- emergency temporary fillings
These services are not covered:
- veneers and bleaching
- extractions (emergency or routine)
- specialty care
We will make every effort to complete your care before the plan year ends, however, all treatment may not be finished by August 31. If this happens you will have the option to re-enroll (if still a student) or continue your care here at regular, affordable school rates.

What if I need additional treatment?
The Student Dental Plan covers only those services listed above. If you need treatment such as oral surgery (extractions), endodontic (root canal) or periodontic (gums) care, complex fillings (use of pins), gold restorations, crowns, veneers, or bleaching, you may choose to become a patient in one of the other treatment areas at the school (which also offer affordable care) see your regular dentist or request referral to a private practitioner in the Boston area.
As a plan subscriber, you are financially responsible for any additional care you receive.
How do I make my first appointment?
You can call Boston University School of Dental Medicine at 617/638-4700 for an appointment one week after sending your application and payment. Full-year coverage begins September 4, 2001 and continues until August 31, 2002.
Your first visit, which will probably take an hour and a half, will include a thorough examination and radiographs (if needed). In most cases, a cleaning will be performed in a follow-up visit. If you had dental radiographs (X-rays) made within the past twelve months, you are encouraged to bring them with you to your first appointment. If the faculty dentist determines that additional radiographs are required for covered services, those radiographs will be made at no additional cost.
If you are currently being seen by a physician or have a medical condition that requires special attention during your dental treatment, we may need a letter from your physician to help us provide you with the highest quality care.
