continuing students not previously on health insurance

Massachusetts state law requires that all students participate in a qualifying health insurance plan during their enrollment. Students can either purchase health insurance coverage through BU or enroll in a comparable plan on their own. BU offers a plan through Aetna Student Health. Please click here for insurance costs.

continuing students on harvard pilgrim health care during 2007-2008

Students enrolled in Harvard Pilgrim Health Care during the 2007-2008 academic year will automatically be enrolled in the Aetna Student Health Individual (HI) Plus Plan as of September 1, 2008. Your Fall invoice will reflect the new insurance rate for that academic year.

waive the BU HI plan

A student must have a qualifying US-based health insurance plan. To waive the plan offered by BU, follow the next three steps:

  • Compare the Aetna Student Health Individual (HI) Plus Plan to your own insurance plan. If your insurance plan is comparable please proceed to the next step. If your insurance plan is not comparable, you must participate in the plan offered by Boston University.
  • Waive the insurance. Electronically waive BU's insurance through the Student Link. Click on the tab "money matters" and then select "medical insurance". Once waived, your insurance charge will be removed from your student account. Please note: you may waive BU's health insurance plan until September 30, 2008.
  • Adjust your invoice and mail payment by the payment deadline.

Qualifying Events: You may also enroll or change plan type anytime if you have had a qualifying event. Qualifying events include: a new baby, marriage, divorce, or loss of coverage through a parent. Documentation of your qualifying event must be presented at the time of enrollment.
