A Learning Organization
As a new member of the BUGSDM community you will be part of a learning organization. In 1996, Dean Frankl introduced a new paradigm of management for BUGSDM. The Learning Organization (LO), developed by management expert Peter Senge, offers a model to address change by establishing the organizational and individual qualities necessary to adapt. The LO focuses on creating a school environment that encourages staff and faculty at all levels to become involved in decisions that affect them; to identify and solve work-related problems; to be empowered; and to work collaboratively with others sharing similar interests. A LO changes and innovates based on continual learning from patients, students, staff, faculty, the profession, and other key stakeholders. Learning is then translated into actions that move the whole school forward.
We have worked hard to provide faculty, staff, and students with the tools necessary to change more quickly and adapt to forces in our highly competitive profession. The LO recognizes the desire of people to learn and grow and provides them with the opportunity to enhance the future of the organization through stewardship. By promoting enrichment and learning, the school recognizes individual responsibility for the personal and professional growth that fosters learning.
Departments that have embraced the learning organization have experienced positive changes in how people work together, communicate, and resolve problems.
Please contact us if you have any suggestions that we can include in our orientation materials. We look forward to meeting you at our next orientation session.

> Communicating with Our Patients
Most employees at BUGSDM will encounter a patient at some point in time. Our patients come to our treatment centers in pain, sometimes afraid, stressed, and worried. They have four major needs in their interactions with us. Our patients want our CARE.
- Confidence
- Acknowledgement
- Reassurance
- Esteem
Confidence: Patients are looking for answers and want to be sure we can assist them. You can demonstrate confidence by creating a welcoming environment, taking the lead in greeting them, looking at them directly, and being ready to help them.
Acknowledgement: Patients want to see that we are paying attention to them as individuals deserving of our respect, not as an interruption in our day. You can demonstrate acknowledgement by addressing each patient by his or her full name, showing interest in their satisfaction, and speaking in a pleasing tone.
Reassurance: Patients want to know we are doing everything possible to help them. You can demonstrate reassurance by listening to them to determine what is needed, answering their questions thoroughly, and explaining things fully.
Esteem: Patients want to be appreciated, thanked, valued, and treated with respect. You can demonstrate esteem by maintaining their privacy when discussing sensitive matters.
